Size Guide

Last updated:

Getting the right size is the difference between a jersey you wear every game day and one that sits in a drawer. This Size Guide explains how Jerseyheaven sizes work, how to measure yourself and a garment you already love, how fit changes from one sport to another, and what to do if you are between two sizes. Every product is offered in our standard size run of S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL, and each product page lists the sizes available for that item. If you are still unsure after reading this, email support@jerseyheaven.com and we will help you choose.

Sizing at a glance

  • Size run: S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL, all adult sizes.
  • Best method: measure a top you already own and like, then compare it with the product page details.
  • Fit varies by sport: hockey and football styles are cut roomy; soccer and volleyball styles sit closer.
  • Between sizes: size up to layer or for a relaxed look, stay with the smaller size for a neat fit.
  • Wrong size? Exchange it within 60 days of delivery; we ship the new size to you free.

1. Our size labels

Our size labels follow the familiar adult apparel scale, from S up to 5XL. Larger sizes increase in both width and length, so a 4XL is not only wider than an XL but also longer in the body and sleeves. That matters if you are tall as well as broad, or broad but not especially tall. Because each style is cut for its sport, the same label can fit differently on a baseball jersey and on a hockey jersey. Where a product has specific measurements or fit notes, they appear on its product page, and those details take priority over the general guidance on this page.

Jerseyheaven size labels and who they usually suit
Size label Position in the range Typical reason fans choose it
S Smallest adult size Slim builds, or a close fit on a roomy style
M Standard The usual everyday size for many adults
L Standard A common choice for broader shoulders or extra room
XL Standard to relaxed Relaxed fit, or layering over a T-shirt
2XL Extended Larger builds, or room to layer over a hoodie
3XL Extended Larger builds who want comfortable movement
4XL Big and tall Big-and-tall fans who need more width and length
5XL Big and tall, largest The most room in the range

This table describes where each label sits in our range. It is not a measurement chart. Measurements can differ between styles, so use the product page details and the methods below to choose.

2. What you need to measure

You only need a soft tape measure, a flat surface and a few minutes. No tape measure? Use a piece of string or a phone charging cable, mark the length with your fingers and then measure it against a ruler or a tape. Measure in inches or centimetres, but use the same unit throughout and write the numbers down so you can compare them with the product page.

3. Method one: measure a top you already love

This is the most reliable method, because it captures the fit you already know you like.

  1. Choose a jersey, T-shirt or hoodie that fits the way you want your new item to fit. If you are buying a hockey jersey to wear over a hoodie, choose a top you already wear over a hoodie.
  2. Lay it flat on a table, front side up, and smooth out wrinkles without stretching the fabric.
  3. Chest width: measure straight across from armpit seam to armpit seam, just below the sleeves. This is often called “pit to pit”.
  4. Body length: measure from the highest point of the shoulder, next to the collar, straight down to the bottom hem.
  5. Sleeve length: for short or long sleeves, measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the sleeve.
  6. Compare these numbers with the measurements or fit notes on the product page. Choose the size whose numbers are closest to your favourite top.

4. Method two: measure your body

If you do not have a garment that fits the way you want, measure yourself. Stand relaxed, breathe normally and keep the tape snug but not tight. It helps to have someone else hold the tape.

  • Chest: measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms and across your shoulder blades, keeping the tape level.
  • Waist: measure around your natural waist, usually just above the belly button. This helps with shorts and fitted styles.
  • Hips: measure around the widest part of your hips, useful for shorts and longer jerseys.
  • Height: useful for judging body length, especially in 4XL and 5XL.

Remember that a garment needs to be larger than your body to be comfortable. How much larger depends on the style, which is why the sport-by-sport notes below matter.

5. How fit changes by sport

Typical fit by jersey style
Style Typical cut Sizing tip
Baseball jerseys Button-front, straight body, short sleeves Usual size to wear open over a tee; consider one size up to button over a layer
Football jerseys Roomy, wide shoulders, longer sleeves Usual size for the classic loose look; one size down for a neater fit
Basketball jerseys Sleeveless, deep armholes, longer body Usual size; size up if you plan to wear a tee underneath
Hockey jerseys Very roomy, made to fit over gear Usual size to layer over a hoodie; one size down for everyday wear
Soccer jerseys Lighter and closer to the body Choose the larger size if between sizes for a relaxed fit
Softball jerseys Similar to baseball, sometimes more fitted Check product notes; size up for room to throw and swing
Volleyball jerseys Close, athletic cut Size up for a looser fit off the court
Hoodies, tees, polos, jackets Everyday apparel fits Your usual clothing size; size up for layering
Shorts Elastic or drawcord waist Use waist and hip measurements and the product’s inseam note

6. Choosing between two sizes

Being between sizes is normal, especially when a style is cut for one sport and you plan to wear it for another purpose. Ask yourself three questions:

  1. What will you wear underneath? A hoodie or thermal layer needs extra room, so choose the larger size.
  2. How do you like your tops to fit? If you prefer a relaxed, game-day look, size up; if you prefer tidy and close, choose the smaller size.
  3. Is length or width the issue? If you are tall, the larger size usually gives better body and sleeve length. If you are broad but not tall, the larger size gives width but may feel long; check the product’s length note.

7. Tips for big-and-tall sizes (3XL to 5XL)

Extended sizes are where measuring pays off most. Start with chest width from a top you like, then check body length against your height: if your favourite shirts are usually too short, length is likely to be your deciding factor. Look at the shoulder seam on a top that fits well; it should sit at or slightly past the edge of your shoulder. On roomy styles such as hockey and football jerseys, some big-and-tall fans find their usual label generous enough and stay with it, while on closer styles such as soccer and volleyball they size up once. If you send us your measurements, we will tell you which label we suggest for the specific product you are looking at.

8. Measuring for shorts

Shorts depend on waist, hips and inseam. Measure the waist of a pair of shorts you like by laying them flat and measuring straight across the top of the waistband, then doubling the number. Measure the inseam from the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg. Elastic and drawcord waists stretch, so focus on the hip measurement and the length you prefer. Basketball-style shorts are often cut longer and looser than everyday shorts; check the product page for any inseam note before you choose.

9. Size labels from other brands and countries

Sizes are not standardised between brands, so an L from one company can fit like an XL from another. Customers in Canada, Australia and New Zealand sometimes see different labelling at home, such as numeric sizes. Our labels are standard US letter sizes, and the safest approach anywhere is to measure rather than convert. Compare your measurements with the product page, and treat any label you know from another brand only as a rough starting point.

10. Ordering for a group or team

When you buy for a rec-league team or a family, sizing mistakes multiply. Send each person this page and ask them to measure a top they like, then collect everyone’s numbers in one place before you order. Encourage people not to guess based on another brand’s label, because sizes vary between brands. If one or two sizes are wrong when the parcel arrives, you can exchange just those items within 60 days of delivery.

11. Care that keeps the fit

Most fit problems after the first few weeks come from washing. Follow the care label, wash inside out in cool water and avoid high dryer heat, which can shrink some fabrics and damage printed or embroidered details. Hang jerseys to dry when possible and avoid ironing directly over numbers or lettering.

12. If the size is not right

If your jersey does not fit, you can exchange it for another size within 60 days of delivery under our Returns & Exchanges Policy. For a size exchange, you pay to send the original back and we ship the new size to you free. Please return it unworn and unwashed; trying it on at home is fine. If we sent the wrong size, everything is free. Spotted the mistake straight after ordering? You can change the size free within 24 hours, before the order ships, on our Cancel or Change an Order page.

13. Sizing questions we hear often

Do you offer youth or kids’ sizes?

Our range is made in adult sizes from S to 5XL. Product pages will show it clearly if a style is ever offered in other sizes.

Will the jersey shrink?

Following the care label keeps shrinkage to a minimum. Cool washing and low or no tumble drying are the safest choices.

Is a 2XL the same as XXL?

Yes. We write extended sizes as 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL, which some brands call XXL, XXXL and so on.

Are your jerseys unisex?

Sports-style jerseys are commonly cut straight in unisex adult letter sizes, and each product page states the cut for that item. If you usually buy women’s sizes, measure a top you like and compare the chest width rather than relying on the label, because unisex sizing tends to run wider in the shoulders and longer in the body. Where a product has a different cut, its product page says so.
